Naming Staples - SKU Breakdown

European Manufactured Staples (ATRO)

All ATRO staples start with a 1, followed by the staple type,

e.g. 80. SKU: 180xxxx

The length of the staple legs come next and is two numbers,

e.g. 08 for 8 mm. or 10 for 10 mm. SKU: 18010xx

Next is a specification for the finish or other special features. Normally the last two digits are 00 as this is our standard wire, but where special finishes such as galvanised are available, these are normally shown by using the following formula:

  • 00 = STANOX WIRE
  • 01 = GALV
  • 08 = STAINLESS STEEL
  • 09 = HOT DIPPED GALV
  • 80 = DIVERGENT POINT

So lets say we want 18010 staples in stainless steel,

SKU: 1801008

This rule must be studied very carefully. For example, there could be staples that have a galvanised finish as standard and they end in 00. The finish of any fastener is also repeated in the product description, so if in doubt check the STANLEY core portfolio.

Every time we change or improve the specification of a fastener we add a letter to the end of our code. We started with E in recent improvements and will move on to F with the next change.

If we have a fastener made at an outside vendor or for a specific customer, we may add a specific suffix to identify it from standard SKUs.

e.g. CHEP is added to our standard N265R35 nails, SKU: N265R35CHEP

American Manufactured Staples (BOSTITCH)

American manufactured staples have different codes, made up following a different system:

The letter prefix at the beginning of these codes designates the staple type.

e.g. SX, SL or SB. SKU: SBxxxxxxx

This is followed by numerical digits which indicate the wire type. Be careful here, we may have more than one wire thickness of the same staple type, for example SB staples are available in three wire thicknesses: 5019, 103020, 3020. These are for three very different types of tools.

SKU: SB5019

(Some fine wire staples have crowns that are not flat, but pointed. This eliminates all 90-degree angles, which are generally points where breakage can occur, and increases their driving strength.)

With the type of staple confirmed we move onto the leg length, using the same system as before but using 08 for 8mm and 10 for 10mm.

e.g 10mm. SKU: SB501910

BOSTITCH USA still uses imperial measurements so there are exceptions to our rule here:

SKU: SB50193/8

Now for the staple finish. Again we have alternative wire finishes and specialist profiles, use this key to create your desired SKU:

  • SS or BI = STAINLESS STEEL
  • DP = DIVERGENT POINT
  • G = GALV
  • BRO = BROWN COLOURED HEAD
  • WHI = WHITE COLOURED HEAD
  • BEI = BEIGE COLOURED HEAD

Lets say we wanted Stainless Steel,

SKU: SB50193/8SS

Finally the box quantity or pack type on BOSTITCH branded fasteners is indicated using the following key:

  • -5M = 5000 staples to a pack.
  • -1M = 1000 staples to a pack, and so on.
  • -5.2M = 5200 staples to a pack, etc.
  • CS = Clam Shell, retail friendly packaging.

So if you see SKU SB50193/8SS-5.2M you know that there are 5200 staples in the pack.
